Nathan Derejko

Nathan Derejko is the Director of the Essex Human Rights Clinic and a PhD candidate in the School of Law at the University of Essex. The focus of his PhD is on the use of force and conduct of hostilities during non-international armed conflict. His research interest include the application of human rights during armed conflict, the human rights obligations of organised armed groups, counter-terrorism and human rights and the legislative competence of the Security Council. Nathan has worked with various inter-governmental and non-governmental organisations within Canada, East Africa and the Middle East. He was formally a PhD Research Fellow at the Irish Centre for Human Rights and is currently an Executive Editor with the Essex Human Rights Review. Nathan studied International Relations during his undergraduate at Dalhousie University in Canada, and holds a Masters in human rights law from the Irish Centre for Human Rights.

Joanna Easton

Jo Easton is a PhD candidate in the Human Rights Centre at the University of Essex: her thesis topic is the Involvement of Bereaved Families in the Inquest Process in the UK following a Death in Custody. She gained a BSc (Hons) at University College London and MA degree in Understanding and Securing Human Rights from the Institute of Commonwealth Studies, London University. Her MA dissertation looked at the death of Jean Charles de Menezes in respect of European and Domestic Human Rights Legislation. She has worked at a number of different charities including British Irish Rights Watch (BIRW), Christian Aid and INQUEST. She is currently an External Ambassador for Essex University. Her interests include accountability of state agents, the criminal justice system, conflict resolution and climate change.

William Midzi

William Midzi is a PhD student in the Government Department at the University of Essex. His thesis topic is: ‘A discursive analysis of the HIV/AIDS policy in South Africa: Explaining Policy Shifts.’ He gained a BA (Hons) degree in Philosophy at the University of Zimbabwe and an MA degree in Human Rights from the Human Rights Centre at the University of Essex. His main research interests cut across the areas of human rights, democracy, political theory, new social movements and International politics of HIV/AIDS.
